Warren Buffett lost a trillion dollars by not investing in Bitcoin.  It’s not that he isn’t savvy.  He is.
 
The reason he got it wrong was that he didn’t understand the opportunity. And why would he?  He is close to 90 years old.  He grew up before the Great Depression, before TV and he was 62 years old when the Internet began.
 
But before you can understand the opportunity you need to understand something about currencies and why they exist.
 
Simply speaking currencies are a tool to exchange one thing for another.
The US dollar is a currency.  So is the Euro.

Before currencies existed if you had something that someone wanted, you had to have something they wanted to exchange it with.

So let’s say you had chickens and your neighbor had coal.  You needed coal.  He needed chicken.  You would decide how much coal was worth how many chickens and you’d exchange them.

That worked fine if you were in a small village. What about when the value was this: A goat was worth 9 chickens. You have the goat. Your neighbor had the chickens. You only need 1 chicken. Your only option would be to either take 9 chickens and barter the 8 chickens you don’t need. Or keep a ledger that your neighbor owed you 8 chickens. If you kept the chickens it would mean finding something you needed that was worth 8 chickens or less.

As you can see, this got pretty complicated. At some point, it became easier to assign the value to a currency so that individuals could buy what they needed.

From looking at the numbers, It’s clear to see how wealth is built.  When to get in and the right time to get out is extremely important.

Investing Blindly Cost Me Big Time…

I was just like you. I thought I was a big shot. I became over-leveraged in real estate in 2008. I thought you couldn’t lose flipping houses. Then the market crashed. I ended up in debt and with a bunch of worthless real estate.

And why wouldn’t I? I thought I knew what I was doing. I saw some friends profiting and read a few articles. My banker was throwing cash at me to buy—interest only—plenty of time to sell a house until it wasn’t.

I lost everything, including my home. My wife left me. My kids wouldn’t talk to me. I was suicidal. I went from living in a mason to renting a room in a house that smelled like boiled cabbage.

What did I do wrong? I wasn’t smart enough to know I didn’t know.

I vowed that next time, I would make sure I didn’t crash.
